Monthly Meteorological Report for Ferny Grove, Brisbane in January 2020 – high rainfall with warm nights and days

At Ferny Grove in January overnight temperatures were well above average and the highest in 10 years. Daytime temperatures were well above average. In the Brisbane area overnight temperatures were above average with record high mean minimum temperature observed at Brisbane and Brisbane Airport. Maximum temperatures across the Brisbane area were above average. At Ferny Grove was above average, the highest in 5 years as a result of showers and thunderstorms in the second half of the month. Most sites in the Brisbane area saw near average or above rainfall totals and from showers and storms in the second half of the month after a settled start to the month. At Ferny Grove air pressure was close to average, mean, minimum and maximum relative humidity was near average, mean, mean minimum and mean maximum dew point was near average, wind speed was above average and there were 7 thunderstorms (8 thunder days).

 

Temperature – well above average night-time and day-time temperatures

Monthly Mean Minimum Temperature: 21.9 ºC, 1.2 ºC above average and 1.1 ºC higher than same month in 2019. This is the second highest on record for January and the highest since the current record high of 22.9 ºC in 2010. All of the official sites in the Brisbane area observed above average mean minimum temperatures with most sites of least 1 ºC above average. The lowest mean minimum temperature observed of all the sites was 19.5 ºC at Canungra and the lowest anomaly from the long term average was 0.7 ºC above at Redcliffe with a mean minimum temperature of 23 ºC. The only other site of less than 1 ºC above average was 20.6 ºC at Beerburrum. The highest mean minimum temperature was 23.7 ºC at Point Lookout (1.1 ºC above average). The highest anomalies from the long term average was observed at the inland sites. The highest anomaly from the long term average was 1.9 ºC above average at Archerfield, followed by 1.7 ºC above average at Amberley (21.3 ºC) and Gatton was 1.6 ºC above average (20.7 ºC). Brisbane observed a mean minimum temperature of 23.1 ºC (1.5 ºC above average). In addition to above average daytime temperature some sites saw record high mean minimum temperatures for January at Brisbane and Brisbane Aero. Amberley measured the equal highest for January since 21.3 ºC in 1987 and Archerfield saw the highest since 22.4 ºC in 1994.

 

Monthly Mean Maximum Temperature: 32.2 ºC, 1.6 ºC above average and 0.2 ºC higher than same month in 2019. This is the fifth highest on record for January and the highest since 32.9 ºC in 2018.

 

All of the official sites in the Brisbane area observed above average to well above average mean maximum temperatures in January of around 1 ºC above average at coastal locations and 2 ºC to 3 ºC at the inland sites. The site measuring mean maximum temperature closest to the long term average was Brisbane at 0.4 ºC above average with a mean maximum temperature of 30.9 ºC. Redcliffe (29.8 ºC ) and Brisbane Aero (29.7 ºC) at 0.6 ºC above average and Point Lookout at 0.9 C above average (30.5 ºC) were the remaining sites that measured mean maximum temperatures that were less than 1 ºC above average. The lowest mean maximum temperature was 29.3 ºC at Redland (Alexandra Hills). The highest anomaly above the long term average was 3.2 ºC above average at Gatton (34.8 ºC). The other inland sites saw mean maximum temperatures that were 1 ºC above average at Archerfield (31.5 ºC), Beaudesert was 1.5 ºC above average (33 ºC) and Amberley was 2 ºC above average (33.2 ºC). The remaining coastal sites saw mean maximum temperatures that were near 1 ºC above average.

 

Mean Monthly Temperature: 27 ºC, 1.4 ºC above average and 0.6 ºC higher than same month in 2019. This is the fourth highest on record for January and the highest since the current record high of 27.3 ºC in 2017. Gatton observed a mean temperature of 27.8 ºC being the highest since 28.5 ºC in 1942 (a more recent record may gone unreported) and Amberly observed the equal highest mean temperature of 27.2 ºC since 27.2 ºC in 1987.

 

Lowest Temperature: 18.6 ºC on 4 January 2020 at 4:38 AM. Same month in 2019 was 18.5 ºC. This is the second highest monthly minimum temperature for January on record, the highest since the current record high of 21 ºC in 2010 on 21 January, equal twenty-eighth lowest daily minimum temperature for January and the lowest since 18.5 ºC on 18 January 2019 at 5:11 AM. Official stations in the Brisbane area observed the lowest temperature of the month on the 4th and 5th at most sites and at some site on the 14th and 18th. The lowest was 14.8 ºC at Gatton on the 5th and the highest was 20.7ºC at Redcliffe on the 27th and Redcliffe and Brisbane on the 18th. There were some cool nights at the start of the month at some sites and during some nights in the middle of the month.

 

Highest Temperature: 35.4 ºC on 29 January 2020 at 12:56 PM. The same month in 2019 was 34.3. This is the fourth lowest monthly daily maximum temperature for January on record, the highest since 38 ºC in 2018 on 13 January at 1:43 PM, the nineteenth highest daily minimum temperature for January and the highest since 36.3 ºC on 31 January 2018 at 1:27 PM. The official sites measured the highest temperature for the month on the 21st and 22nd at many sites, and some sites in the 6th, 10th and 29th. The lowest was 30.6 ºC at Cape Moreton Lighthouse on the 10th and the highest was 39.1 ºC at Gatton on the 21st. Brisbane observed its highest temperature of 33.5 ºC on the 22nd. The first 11 days of the month saw hot days and returned during most days at the end of the month starting from the 20th.

 

Lowest Maximum Temperature: 27.4 ºC on 16 January 2020 at 11:52 AM. This is the fourth highest monthly lowest maximum temperature for January on record, equal twenty-third lowest maximum temperature for January and the lowest since 25.2 ºC in 2017 on 3 January at 8:06 AM. This month in 2019 was 28.9 ºC. Most of the official stations in the Brisbane area measured the coolest day on the 12th, 13th and 16th. These ranged between 25.4 ºC at Point Lookout on the 12th and 29 ºC at Beaudesert on the 16th and 8th. In the Brisbane area the cool days almost exclusively occurred between the 12th and 18th during days with showers and storms.

 

Highest Minimum Temperature: 25.4 ºC on 23 January 2020 at 5:07 AM. This is the second highest monthly and daily January highest minimum temperature on record, and the highest since 26.8 ºC in 2017 on 21 January at 11:10 PM. This month in 2019 was 22.9 ºC. During January nights were above average during most of the month especially later in the month with all of the highest temperatures between the 23rd and 25th. These ranged between 24.3 C at Gatton on the 24th and 26.4 C at Logan City Treatment Plant on the 25th.

 

Monthly Mean Minimum Grass Temperature: 20.6 ºC (1.6 ºC higher than same month in 2019).

 

Lowest Minimum Grass Temperature: 16.9 ºC on 2 January 2020 (0.2 ºC higher than same month in 2019).

 

Highest Minimum Grass Temperature: 24.7 ºC on 23 January 2020 (3.4 ºC lower than same month in 2019). This coincided with the highest minimum air temperature of 24.4 ºC for the month.

 

Highest Minimum Grass Temperature Depression: 2.7 ºC on 2 January 2020 with a minimum grass temperature of 19.6 ºC and an air temperature of 16.9 ºC.

 

Lowest Minimum Grass Temperature Depression: -0.1 ºC on 16 January 2020 with a minimum grass temperature of 21.5 ºC and an air temperature of 21.4 ºC.

 

Minimum temperatures during January were cool or close to average in the first week of the month, followed by above average temperatures during most of the remainder of the month. The month started with the 1st to 3rd 1 ºC above average, cooling to 2 ºC below average on the 4th and 5th before easing to near average on the 6th and 7th. The 7th and 8th was 1 ºC above average, near average on the 9th, warmed to 1 ºC above average on the 10th and 2 ºC above average on the 11th and 12th. Except for the 14th which was near average the 13th to 19th was 1 ºC above average. The 20th and 21st saw temperatures 4 ºC above average, easing to 1 ºC above average on the 23rd rising to 5 ºC above average on the 23rd (the highest temperature of the month) followed by 4 ºC above average on the 24th and 25th. On the 26th it was 1 ºC above average, rising to 2 ºC above average on the 27th and 28th, 3 ºC above average on the 29th and 30th and 1 ºC above average on the 31st.

 

Maximum temperatures experienced in January were mostly above average during two extended periods separated by a period of cooler days and was below average on some days during the middle of the month. A 11 day period of above average temperatures started with the 1st to 4th 2 ºC above average, 3 ºC above average on the 5th, 1 ºC above average on the 6th and rose to 2 ºC above average on the 7th and 3 ºC above average on the 8th and 9th. The 10th and 11th was 4 ºC above average before the cooler mid-month period being 2 ºC below average on the 12th, 1 ºC below average on the 13th, close to average on the 14th to 15th, 3 ºC below average on the 16th, near average on the 17th and 3 ºC below average on the 18th. Above average temperatures followed for the rest of the month starting with 1 ºC above average on the 19th, 4 ºC above average on the 20th and 5 ºC above average on the 21st and 22nd. It cooled a little to 1 ºC above average on the 23rd before rising to 4 ºC above average on the 24th, easing back to 1 ºC above average on the 26th and 27th. It rose to 2 ºC above average on the 28th, 5 ºC above average (highest temperature of the month) on the 29th, 2 ºC above average on the 30th and 1 ºC above average on the 31st.

 

Heatwave Conditions (Maximum temperatures): 19th to 31st: Low intensity on 19th (31.1 ºC) and 25th to 31st (25th: 32 ºC, 26th: 31.3 ºC, 27th: 31.8 ºC, 28th: 32.3 ºC, 29th: 35.4 ºC, 30th: 32.5 ºC and 31st: 31.9 ºC), Severe intensity on 20th to 24th (20th: 34.7 ºC, 21st: 35.3 ºC, 22nd: 35.4 ºC, 23rd: 31.3 ºC, 24th: 34.1 ºC).

Monthly Mean Minimum MSL Pressure: 1010.3 hPa (2.7 hPa lower than same month in 2019). This is the second highest on record for January and the highest since the current record high of 1015.4 hPa in 2010.

 

Monthly Mean Maximum MSL Pressure: 1014.2 hPa (2.5 hPa lower than same month in 2019). This is the second highest on record for January and the highest since the current record high of 1016.9 hPa in 2010.

 

Monthly Mean MSL Pressure: 1012.3 hPa (0.1 hPa above average, 2.6 hPa lower than same month in 2019). This is the second highest on record for January and the lowest since the current record high of 1016.1 hPa in 2010.

Lowest MSL Pressure: 1002.3 hPa on 18 January 2020 at 3:59 PM. The same month in 2019 saw 1010.1 hPa. This is the fifth highest monthly minimum air pressure for January, the lowest since 1002.8 hPa in 2017 on 20 January at 4:59 PM, the thirteenth lowest daily minimum air pressure for January and the lowest since 1001 hPa on 31 January 2018 at 3:00 AM.

 

Highest MSL Pressure: 1018.4 hPa on 31 January 2020 at 8:38 AM. The same month in 2019 saw 1019.5 hPa. This is the second lowest January monthly maximum air pressure, the lowest since 1017.8 hPa in 2017 on 29 January at 8:45 PM, the twenty-fifth highest daily maximum air pressure for January and the highest since 1019 hPa on 21 January 2019 at 9:23 AM.

Note: Air pressure measurements are being closely monitored to maintain its accuracy. Over the month of January, a difference of 0.09 hPa lower compared to the official BoM Brisbane site – No. 040913 was observed which is deemed acceptable.

 

Relative Humidity – near average mean humidity, mean minimum humidity, and mean maximum humidity

Monthly Mean Minimum Humidity: 45.1 % (2.9 % lower than same month in 2019 and 1.1 % above average). This is the third lowest on record for January and the highest since 48.5 % in 2018.

 

Monthly Mean Maximum Humidity: 83.7 % (1.9 % lower than same month in 2019 and 2.4 % below average). This is second lowest on record for January and the highest since 89.4 % in 2018.

 

Monthly Mean Humidity: 64.4 % (12.6 % lower than same month in 2019 and 0.6 % below average). This is the third lowest on record for January and the highest since 69% in 2018.

 

Lowest Humidity: 26 % on 5 January 2020 at 11:54 AM (3 % higher than this month in 2019). This is the third lowest monthly and daily minimum humidity for January on record and the highest since 27% in 2018 on 14 January at 4:40 PM.

 

Highest Humidity: 92 % on 26 January 2020 at 6:37 AM (2 % lower than this month in 2019). This is the lowest monthly January maximum humidity on record exceeding the previous record low of 94% in 2019 on 4 January at 6:10 AM.

 

Dew point – near average mean, mean maximum and mean minimum dew point

Monthly mean minimum dew point: 16.6 ºC (1.1 ºC above average). This is the second lowest monthly mean minimum dew point for January on record and the lowest since the current record low of 16.2 ºC in 2019.

 

Monthly mean maximum dew point: 21.2 ºC (1.1 ºC above average). This is the sixth highest and lowest monthly mean maximum dew point for January and the highest since 21.8 ºC in 2018.

Monthly mean dew point: 18.9 ºC (1.1 ºC above average). This is the second lowest monthly mean dew point for January and the lowest since the current record low of 18.3ºC in 2019.

 

Lowest dew point: 11.1 ºC on 10 January 2020 at 12:18 PM. This is the third lowest monthly dew point for January on record, the highest since 11.4 ºC in 2018 on 15 January at 6:17 AM, the fourth lowest daily dew point for January and the lowest since 8.7 ºC in 2019 on 28 January at 11:49 AM.

 

Highest dew point: 25.2 ºC on 20 January 2020 at 10:21 AM. This is the fifth highest monthly maximum dew point on record for January, the highest since 26.1 ºC in 2018 on 1 January at 2:07 PM, the equal ninth highest daily dew point for January and the highest since 25.7 ºC on 13 January 2018 at 2:40 PM.

 

Wind Speed – above average wind speed

Maximum Wind Gust: 42 km/hr on 23 January 2020 at 11:35 AM. This is the fifth highest January maximum wind gust and the highest since 55.7 km/hr in 2018 on the 15 January at 5:38 PM. The maximum wind gust this month in 2019 was 37 km/hr. This is the twenty-first highest daily wind gust on record for January and the highest since 54.4 km/hr in 2017 on the 22 January at 6:49 PM.

 

Maximum Wind Speed: 26 km/hr on 19 January 2020 at 12:00 PM (Moderate Force Wind). This is the fourth lowest monthly maximum wind speed for January on record, the highest since 32 km/hr in 2018 on 15 January at 7:28 AM, the twenty-first highest daily wind speed on record for January and the highest since 30.2 km/hr on 26 January 2018 at 2:13 PM.

 

Wind Run: 4155.2 km (541.8 km higher than same month in 2019), 1035.7 km above average and 33 % above average. This is the highest on record for January total wind run exceeding the previous record of 3613.4 km in 2019.

 

Monthly Mean Wind Speed: 5.5 km/hr (1.8 km higher than this month in 2019), 1.5 km/hr above average and 38.8 % above average. This is the highest on record for January exceeding the previous record high of 4.9 km/hr in 2019.

 

Daily Mean Maximum Wind Gust: 28.5 km/hr (1.7 km/hr higher than this month in 2019), 4.1 km/hr above average and 16.7% above average. This is the fourth lowest daily mean maximum wind speed on record for January and the highest since 35.8 km/hr in 2018.

 

Daily Mean Maximum Wind Speed: 15.7 km/hr, 2 km/hr higher than this month last year, 6 km/hr above average and 62.4 % above average. This is the third lowest daily mean maximum wind speed on record for January and the highest since 18 km/hr in 2018.

Rainfall – below average rainfall

Monthly Rainfall Total: 183.3 mm (38.3 mm above average) and 126.4% of the long-term average. This total is in decile 8/ 79th percentile which ranks as high and 57.9 mm above the long-term median (144.6 % of long term median). This total is higher than this month last year which was 11.2 mm, and the eighth highest on record for January and the highest since 208.1 mm in 2015. Long period rainfall totals deficiencies improved in January following below average rainfall totals in 2019 with all long period totals no longer in the lowest 20% of records. August to January rainfall total was 23.2 mm above average (decile 6) with a total of 500.6 mm. 9 monthly to 48 month rainfall totals also improved especially for 36 month and 48 month totals and was between 21.8 mm below average for 48 month rainfall and 242.8 mm below average for 24 month rainfall.

 

The main official sites in the Brisbane area observed near average rainfall totals in January and above average at some sites. The except to this was Gatton which measured a total of 58.6 mm (53% of the long term average), ranked as low and observed the lowest monthly total of these main sites. Most sites ranked historically as average and saw totals that ranged between 82% of the long term average at Point Lookout (108.6 mm) and 135% of the long term average at Redcliffe (187.8 mm). Logan City Treatment Plant ranked as high with a total of 172.3 mm which is 135 % of the long term average. The highest total of the main sites was 257.0 mm at Redlands (Alexandra Hills). Of all the official sites the highest monthly total was 261.5 mm at Godwin Beach and the lowest monthly total was 37.4 mm at Wivenhoe Dam. Brisbane measured a total of 165.6 mm (118% of the long term average) and ranked as average.

 

Very little rainfall occurred across the Brisbane area through to the 12th. From the 12th was showers and thunderstorms with moderate totals at some locations especially on the 17th and 18th.

 

Number of Rain Days (0.1 mm or greater): 15 days, 6 greater than this month in 2019 and 4.9 days above average. This is equal fourth highest on record for January and is the highest since 22 days in 2015.

 

Highest Daily Total: 90.9 mm on 18 January 2020. This is the seventh highest of January highest daily rainfall on record on monthly and daily basis and the highest since 271.3 mm on 28 January 2013 (Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald). The highest daily total in the Brisbane area of all official sites was 141.4 mm at Redland (Alexandra Hills) on the 18 January 2020.

 

Monthly Rainfall Total – (automatic gauge) 24 hours to 9am: 168.6 mm (14.7 mm less than the site official standard gauge and within 8 %). Highest daily total of automatic gauge, (24 hours to 9am): 78.2 mm on 18 January 2020, (24 hours from midnight): 50 mm on 18 January 2020.

 

Note: This automatic gauge for the month of January, meets the expected accuracy (of +/- 10% of the standard gauge) at -8%.

 

On the 11th was light thundery showers in the evening with nearby thunderstorms, followed by light rain in the early hours of the 12th with 6.5 mm measured on the 12th. On the 15th was a light shower in the early hours (0.1 mm). In the late morning were light to moderate showers with brief heavy falls of 1.2 mm in 2 minutes. In the evening was a brief light to moderate shower at 8pm, another at 10pm and a further shower in the late evening with heavy falls. 15 mm was measured on the 15th before frequent showers from the mid morning, less frequent from the late morning to early afternoon on the 16th. On the 17th was a light shower with 1.5 mm measured on the 17th. In the late morning was a light shower and another in the late afternoon. In the evening was light showers before a severe thunderstorm with heavy falls in the late evening followed by heavy showers. Rain followed in the early hours of the 18th with some moderate to heavy falls at times between 12am and 1am and 3 am and 4am clearing at 6am. On the 18th 90.9 mm was measured before showers in the late afternoon and early evening with some moderate falls in addition to a nearby thunderstorm.

 

In the early hours of the 19th was light showers with 18.5 mm measured on the 19th. In the late morning was a brief moderate thunderstorm with very little thunder. In the early afternoon was a mild decaying thunderstorm with moderate falls with 27.4 mm measured on the 20th. During the mid afternoon of the 20th was nearby thunderstorms, a mild brief thunderstorm with brief heavy falls in the mid afternoon and a mild brief thunderstorm with a very short period of heavy rain in the late afternoon. 4.5 mm was measured on the 21st. A brief decaying thunderstorm in the afternoon with little thunder and 5 mm measured on the 22nd. Light rain in the evening of the 22nd with 0.8 mm measured on the 23rd. In the late morning was a mild thunderstorm with a brief period of heavy rain, followed by some light showers during the middle of the day which brought 6.5 mm on the 24th. A mild thunderstorm in the early hours of the 25th clearing in the early morning with 1.5 mm observed. Light showers in the mid morning of the 26th with 1.5 mm measured on the 26th and 0.5 mm on the 27th. Light showers in the early hours and during the morning with mostly light falls except for brief heavy falls with one shower. 3.1 mm was measured on the 28th.

 

There was 2 days with falls of at least 25 mm (2 greater than same month in 2019) with 3 days of less than 1 mm (2 less than same month in 2019).

 

Highest rainfall rate was 167 mm/hr on the 19 January 2020 at 11:49 AM. This is the second highest monthly and daily rainfall rate for January and the highest since the current record high of 217.2 mm/hr on 2 January 2017 at 8:06 PM.

 

The highest hourly rainfall total was 33.6 mm on the 17 January 2020 at 11:14 PM. This is the second highest hourly rain on monthly and daily basis for January and the highest since 53.9 mm on 2 January 2017 at 7:46 PM.

• Cloudy periods on the 19th with further showers and thunderstorms. A warm morning with quite stable temperature. The maximum temperature was reached in the late morning before falling with and following a storm as clouds increased. High relative humidity early in the day and much of the day with the rainfall.
• Cloudy at times on the 20th with a very warm morning with the maximum temperature reached in the middle of the day. Variable temperature between two thunderstorms in the afternoon. The dew point became high later in the morning before easing to moderately high for much of the remainder of the day. High relative humidity early in the day.
• On the 21st cloud cleared during the morning before increasing clouds in the afternoon with a mild thunderstorm. A warm night followed by a warm day. The temperature became stable in the early afternoon close to the maximum before falling with the storm in the mid afternoon. Quite variable wind direction over the entire day

• A persistent high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge and onshore wind flow along the east Queensland coast between the 1st and 9th with the warm and settled weather over the region
• The ridge along the east Queensland coast started to weaken on the 10th as a inland trough started to draw warm air eastwards towards the east Queensland coast
• On the 11th the high pressure system maintained a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast as instability increases due to a surface trough shifting east over southern and central districts of the state. This in combination with a upper level trough brought showers and storms into the south-east of the state
• The surface trough with associated showers and thunderstorms cleared off the southern Queensland coast early in the day on the 12th. The inland section of the surface trough however continued to maintain some instability. A new high pressure system shifted east into the Tasman Sea extending onshore winds along the east Queensland coast
• On the 13th the new high pressure system continued to extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast and moist onshore winds. The inland surface trough along with a upper level trough brought instability eastwards which remained to west of the south-east of the state
• The high pressure ridge and onshore winds continued on the 14th. A coastal trough off the southern Queensland coast brought some showers along coastal parts of the region. The inland trough maintained instability well to the west.
• On the 15th a surface trough was situated near the southern Queensland coast and combined with the high pressure system in the Tasman Sea to bring showers along the southern Queensland coast and adjacent inland.
• A surface trough about the south-east coast on the 16th combined with onshore wind flow and an upper level trough to maintain instability along the east Queensland coast as the inland trough continued to remain well to the west.
• An inland surface trough remained in place on the 17th and combined with a upper level trough to bring showers and storms over eastern Queensland. Moist winds also extended along the east Queensland coast as the high pressure ridge remains in place
• On the 18th a coastal trough developed overnight and combined with a upper level trough and the inland surface trough to bring showers and storms especially early in the day with moderate to heavy falls over the south-east. The high pressure system continued to extend onshore winds along the east Queensland coast
• A weakening surface trough on the 19th remained over the south-east of the state maintaining further showers and storm activity. The inland surface trough and a upper level trough also contributed instability.
• The 20th saw a surface trough that was situated from the north-west of the state to the southern inland extend a moist and unstable air mass to its east across to the east Queensland coast.
• On the 21st the surface trough shifted further east into the Darling Downs before starting to retreat westwards late in the day. This continued to extend a moist and unstable airless to the east and continued to support showers and storms.
• A decaying surface trough on the 22nd over the inland of the state brought some showers and storms from the north-west to the south-east of the state to the east of the surface trough. This drew hot air eastwards of the surface trough.
• As the surface trough retreated further westwards in the west of the state it combined with a tropical low pressure system in the Northern Territory to extend a moist and unstable airmass eastwards across to the east Queensland coast
• On the 24th a surface trough remained slow moving over the far west of the state while the tropical low pressure system remains over north-east Northern Territory. Moist and unstable air extended to the east to bring unstable conditions over most of the state.
• A surface trough remained in place over the west of the state on the 25th and combined with the tropical low pressure system to extend a moist and unstable air mass across the state to the east of the trough with further showers and storms
• On the 26th the tropical low pressure slowly shifted northwards towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. A weak surface trough extended from the low across western and northern Queensland. This extended a moist and unstable air mass over much of the state along with a ridge along the east Queensland coast
• The 27th saw the tropical low pressure system remain in place near the Northern Territory border as it slowly moves northwards before shifting southwards across the Northern Territory from the 28th. This system no longer influenced the weather over south-east from the 27th.
• From the 27th to 31st a high pressure system extended a ridge along the east Queensland coast with mostly settled conditions

• 1/1/20: Fine and partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds. The temperature was a little variable from mid-morning to mid afternoon. Dew point was stable early before rising during the early morning and then falling through the morning close to average. From the late morning the dew point rose and became stable later in the evening whilst remaining close to average. Mostly calm winds early in the day before N to ENE in the early morning becoming E to NE from the mid morning, ESE to NE from late morning, E to NE from mid afternoon and N to NE in the evening.
• 2/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds clearing in the afternoon with ci clouds in the late afternoon. The temperature was a little variable at times from the mid morning to mid afternoon. Dew point fell during the early hours, rose during the morning, before falling from the mid morning. The dew point became stable in the afternoon before falling slowly from the late afternoon and was near average over the entire day. Relative humidity was near average. Mostly calm winds in the early hours, before variable winds in the early morning was followed by SE to NE winds during the morning and E to NE from the mid morning. In the afternoon winds were E to ESE, ENE to ESE from mid afternoon, E to NE from the late afternoon and calm later in the evening.
• 3/1/19: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds clearing in the early afternoon. The temperature was a little variable from the mid morning to early afternoon. The dew point fell slowly early in the day and briefly rose in the early morning close to average. From the mid morning the dew point fell becoming moderately low in the early afternoon before rising back to near average in the afternoon and then mostly stable from the mid afternoon. Relative humidity was near average becoming moderately low during the afternoon returning to near average in the evening. Calm winds early in the day, variable winds of between N to SE during the morning, ENE to SE from the mid morning with some S to SE winds, ENE to ESE from mid afternoon, ENE to NE from the late afternoon and N to NE in the evening.
• 4/1/19: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clearing during the afternoon. Smoke haze developed. The dew point fell in the early hours of the day close to average, rose during the morning, then fell from the mid morning before rising again during the middle of the day while remaining close to average. In the afternoon the dew point fell and became moderately low in the mid morning before rising later in the afternoon and became stable and near average in the evening. Near average relative humidity. Calm winds in the early hours of the day became S to SW, then S to SE, and then N to NE in the early morning before ESE to NNE in the morning and ESE to NE later in the morning. In the afternoon winds were E to NE, E to NE later in the afternoon and N to NE in the evening.
• 5/1/19: Sunny with smoke haze. A warm day. The dew point was generally stable and near average from early in the day before falling during the morning, became moderately low in the late morning and then rose for a brief period in the early afternoon returning to near average. In the afternoon and evening the dew point slowly rose close to average. Near average relative humidity during the day and moderately low from the mid morning to mid afternoon. Calm winds early in the day before light W to NNW in the early morning, followed by NNW to NE winds during the morning with some NE to ESE and NNW to WNW winds, E to NE in the afternoon and NE to ENE in the evening with N to NE winds in the late evening.
• 6/1/19: Partly cloudy with sc and cu clouds and cloudy at times in the afternoon. Smoke haze. Dew point slowly fell slowly in the early hours of the day, before rising during the early morning close to average. For the remainder of the day the dew point was generally stable and near average. Near average relative humidity. Calm winds early in the day with S to WSW winds, followed by S to SE winds in the early morning before light SSE to E winds in the morning, ENE to ESE winds from the mid morning, ENE to NNE winds in the late afternoon, N to NE in the evening and became calm in the late evening.
• 7/1/19: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds easing in the afternoon. The temperature was variable in the late morning and the temperature fell for a brief period of time. Dew point was mostly stable and near average early in the day, fell slowly during the morning, rose from the mid afternoon before falling during the morning while being near average over the entire day. Near average relative humidity. Calm winds in the early hours with generally N to ENE winds from the early morning with some SSE to ENE in the early morning and ENE to SE in the mid morning. The dew point was near average and mostly stable early in the day before falling during the morning and then generally rose in the afternoon while rising and falling a few times whilst remaining near average. In the evening the dew point stabilised. Relative humidity was near average. Mostly calm winds early in the day before NNW to ENE winds during the morning, NNE to E becoming ESE to SE in the late afternoon, before E to NE winds from the afternoon and N to ENE winds in the late evening.
• 10/1/20: Mostly sunny with some cu clouds with ac clouds in the afternoon. Smoke haze. The temperature was a little variable from the late morning to mid afternoon. The dew point was stable and near average early in the day and in the morning before falling in the late morning and became moderately low in the early afternoon. The dew point rose again back to near average before rising at a slower rate for the rest of the afternoon, stabilising in the evening. Moderately low relative humidity early in the day and from the late morning to early afternoon and otherwise near average. • 11/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu clouds and increasing cu and as clouds from the middle of the day becoming cloudy in the middle of the day. Smoke haze. Light thundery showers during the evening with nearby thunderstorms. A warm day. The temperature rose very steadily during the morning before falling from midday with the increase cloud coverage. The temperature was briefly stable in the mid afternoon and during the evening. The dew point was very stable and near average from early in the day before rising slowly in the afternoon and quicker in the early evening before and with the showers. Later in the evening the dew point dropped slightly before rising slowly in the late evening remaining close to average. Relative humidity was near average and became high in the evening with the showers. Light N to NE winds in the early hours of the day, N to ENE winds from early morning, N to NE in the mid morning and followed by N to ENE winds later in the morning with some ENE to S winds. From the late morning winds were ENE to ESE, E to NE from mid afternoon and became ESE to S in the evening. For the rest of the evening winds were variable of SW to SE winds, followed by SE to ENE winds and then NNE to W winds in the late evening.
• 12/1/20: Cloudy with cu and as clouds. Some light rain in the early hours. The temperature was stable early in the day with a warm morning. The maximum temperature was reached in the late morning before falling from the middle of the day. The dew point was near average and mostly stable from early in the day before falling from the late morning while remaining close to average. Relative humidity was moderately high from early in the day returning to near average in the evening. The relative humidity stopped falling in the late morning. Calm winds early in the day, SSW to W winds in the early morning, then S to SW winds and S to SE winds from the mid morning. In the late evening winds became S to SW.
• 13/1/20: Mostly cloudy with cu, sc and as clouds with clouds easing with cu, sc, as, ci and cs clouds in the afternoon. The temperature was stable in the late morning before becoming variable to the mid afternoon. The dew point was near average and mostly stable from early in the day before falling in the afternoon and became stable while remaining close to average in the evening. Relative humidity was near average and quite stable early in the day becoming slightly above average from the late morning and in the afternoon before returning to near average in the evening. Light S to SW winds from early in the day, S to SSE winds during the morning, SSE to SE from the mid morning with some S to SSE in the afternoon and became S to SSE in the evening.
• 14/1/20: Mostly cloudy with as and cu clouds with clouds easing in the afternoon with also ci and cs clouds in the afternoon. The temperature was stable early in the day and was variable in the late morning to the mid afternoon. The dew point fell slowly early in the day moderately low before rising through to the mid morning while returning to near average. From the mid morning the dew point was near average and mostly stable though was a little variable in the afternoon. Stable and moderately low relative humidity early in the day and near average from the morning. Light SSW to SW winds at times early, S to SW in the morning, S to SE from the mid morning, SE to ESE winds in the afternoon, SE winds from the late afternoon and became SSE to SW later in the evening.
• 15/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds, with increasing cu clouds during the morning becoming cloudy later in the morning before becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with ci clouds later in the afternoon. A light shower in the early hours. Light to moderate showers between 10am and 10:30am with brief heavy falls of 1.2 mm in 2 minutes. A brief light to moderate shower at 8pm and another at 10pm followed by further shower with heavy falls in the late evening. A warm morning with the temperature stable for much of the early hours. The temperature fell from 9:15am before and during the morning showers. The temperature then rose through to the afternoon and was a little variable. Dew point rose from early in the day close to average and rose sharply and became moderately high in the late morning with the showers. From the late morning the dew point fell back to near average becoming stable in the afternoon and rising slowly in the evening. Near average relative humidity today except for moderately high relative humidity from 9:30am before and during the showers before returning to near average in the late morning and rose moderately high in the late evening also. Light SW to SSE winds at times in the early hours, WSW to SSW in the early morning becoming S to ESE during the morning, NNW to NE winds with some E to NE winds from the mid morning and became S to SE with the showers later in the morning. In the afternoon winds were light E to SE, E to ENE in the evening and N to NNE winds later in the evening and calm at times.
• 16/1/20: Cloudy periods with cu clouds easing a little with cu and sc clouds in the afternoon. Frequent showers from the mid morning to the late morning, and less frequent from the late morning to the early afternoon. Variable temperature from the mid morning to mid afternoon which fell and rose twice. A cool day. Near average and stable dew point early before becoming variable and moderately high at times from the mid morning to mid afternoon. From the mid afternoon the dew point returned to near average while falling becoming mostly stable in the evening. Relative humidity was stable and near average early in the day and became high from during the morning and during the rest of the day. The relative humidity was a little variable from the mid morning to early afternoon. Light N to NE winds at times in the early hours and otherwise calm, N to NE winds from the mid morning, N to NE later in the morning and N to NE winds later in the morning. E to NE light winds with some N to NE winds at times in the afternoon and in the late afternoon, E to NE in the evening becoming NNE to NE and calm later in the evening.
• 17/1/20: Mostly cloudy with cu and sc clouds. A light shower in the early hours, another in the late morning and in the late afternoon. In the evening were some light showers before a severe thunderstorm with heavy falls in the late evening followed by showers with heavy falls. 21 mm in 15 minutes to 10:57pm and 29 mm in 31 minutes to 11:13pm. A warm morning with mostly stable temperature early in the day. The temperature was very variable from the mid morning to early afternoon and rose and fell numerous times. The dew point was near average and mostly stable early in the day before rising during the morning becoming stabilising moderately high before falling for a brief period of time back to near average. In the afternoon the dew point slowly fell, became mostly stable from the mid afternoon and then rose back to moderately high in the evening. There was a temporarily easing of the dew point with the start of the storm before the dew point recovered. Relative humidity was near average from early in the day and became moderately high from the mid morning to the late afternoon and variable at times from the mid morning to the early afternoon. Relative humidity rose quite steeply during the evening. Mostly calm winds early in the day with some N to NW winds, E to NE winds during the morning with some N to NE winds. Winds were light E to ENE in the afternoon with some ENE to NE winds and E to NE in the evening. Winds were ESE to NE with the storm, N to NE from 11pm and SSW to SW after the storm.
• 18/1/20: Mostly cloudy with cu and sc clouds and some ac clouds in the afternoon. Rain in the early hours of the day with some moderate to heavy falls at times between 12am and 1am and 3am and 4am clearing at 6am. Showers in the late afternoon and early evening with some moderate falls along with a nearby thunderstorm. A warm morning and a cool day with the temperature stable but a little variable from the late morning through to the afternoon. In the evening the temperature fell quite slowly. Dew point fell from the early hours close to average before rising during the morning and became moderately high. From the late morning the dew point rose slowly, became stable from the mid afternoon, before falling with the showers back to average, rising slightly after the showers and then fell slowly for the rest of the evening. Relative humidity was high and very stable from early in the day. From the late morning the relative humidity stopped falling in the late morning before rising slowly through to the afternoon before rising later in the afternoon with the showers. In the evening relative humidity was high and very stable. Light SW to NNW winds early in the day, with SE to NE winds from 1am, NNW to WNW from 2am becoming calm, WWN to SSW from 3:30am, WSW to SSW from 4am, S to SW from 5am and S to ESE with some S to SW later in the morning. In the afternoon winds were S to SE with some E to SE winds, E to SE from the mid afternoon, backing in the evening to S to SE early in the evening, then S to SW and calm for the remainder of the evening.
• 19/1/20: Cloudy periods with cu, sc and some ac clouds. Light showers in the early hours of the day. A brief moderate thunderstorm in the late morning with very little thunder with 12 mm in 10 minutes. A decaying mild thunderstorm at 2pm with moderate falls. A warm morning with the temperature quite stable early in the day before rising quickly during the morning. The maximum temperature close to average was reached just before 11am before falling before and with the storm under increasing clouds before warming at midday following the storm. The temperature stopped rising at 1pm and became stable before falling during the afternoon thunderstorm and then rising following the storm. In the late afternoon the temperature fell slowly becoming mostly stable in the evening. Dew point was stable and near average before rising to moderately high during the morning before falling before and with the storm in the late morning back to near average. After the storm the dew point rose again and became moderately high. In the early afternoon the dew point fell back to average with the afternoon storm before rising following the storm moderately high. In the late afternoon the dew point fell close to average before rising slowly in the evening and returned to moderately high in the late evening. Stable and high relative humidity early in the day, became moderately high in the morning. The relative humidity rose sharply with the late morning storm and became high. The relative humidity fell in the afternoon temporarily before rising before the mild storm, rose with the mild storm and remained high over the remainder of the day. Calm winds with some W to SSW winds at times in the early hours of the day and early morning followed by NW to SW winds with some NE to ESE winds during the morning. From the mid morning winds were E to NE with some E to SE winds becoming moderate NW to NE with the storm veering SE after the storm. Light E to SE winds in the afternoon becoming ENE to NNE with some N to NW winds with the storm and N to NW becoming E to NE after the storm. In the evening winds were light N to NNE and calm at times before light N to NE winds later in the evening.
• 20/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc, and cloudy at times with cu, sc, ac and cb in the afternoon. Nearby thunderstorms during the mid afternoon followed by a mild brief decaying thunderstorm at 3pm with light rain. A mild brief thunderstorm with a very short period of heavy rainfall at 5:15pm from the edge of a thunderstorm. A very warm morning and a warm day with the maximum temperature reached in the middle of the day. Before and during each afternoon storm the temperature fell with stable temperature between the two storms before becoming stable in the evening and rising slowly later in the evening. Dew point was moderately high and stable early in the day before rising during the morning reaching a high of 25 C later in the morning and falling briefly but sharply in the late morning back to average. In the afternoon the dew point briefly rose sharply moderately high before becoming stable and then fell from the late afternoon and was close to average and stable in the evening before rising later in the evening. Stable and high relative humidity early in the day becoming near average in the morning and early afternoon before generally rising from the mid afternoon and fell briefly at times. Light N to NE winds from early with some ENE to NE winds in the early morning, E to NE from the late morning, moderate winds with the 3pm storm, ENE to NE following the storm, veered to SE later in the afternoon and backing to NNW to ENE in the late afternoon following the late afternoon storm. In the evening winds became calm with E to NE with N to NE winds from the mid evening.
• 21/1/20: Partly cloudy with sc and ac clouds clearing to sunny skies during the morning with some cu clouds. Increasing cu, cb, ci, cs and ac clouds with an approaching storm becoming partly cloudy following the storm with cu, sc and ac clouds. A brief decaying mild thunderstorm at 4pm with light to moderate rain with little thunder. A very warm day after a warm night with the temperature falling slowly in the early hours. The temperature became stable in the early afternoon close to the maximum temperature before falling sharply from 3pm as the cloud increased ahead of the storm. The temperature stopped falling at 4pm and after briefly rising fell from the late afternoon close to average. The dew point was near average and stable early in the day becoming stable during the morning. The dew point rose during the morning, became moderately high from the late morning and became stable in the afternoon. In the mid afternoon the dew point fell before rising slightly with the storm and fell again to near average after the storm and then became stable soon afterwards. Relative humidity was near average from early in the day rising 24% in 90 minutes in the mid afternoon ahead and with the storm before dropping back to near average from the late afternoon. Light N to NE winds early in the day with some calm winds, W to NW becoming NNE to NW in the early morning and S to SW during the morning followed by S to ESE winds in the mid morning. Following this the wind backed to NNE to NE and then E to SE in the late morning and from 2pm was E to NE followed by N to NE with the storm and N to NW after the storm. In the evening winds veered to S to SSW in the early evening before variable winds from 8pm with some calm winds.
• 22/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds in the morning with also ac and ci clouds from the middle of the day, before increasing as clouds with cu clouds from the mid afternoon. Light rain in the evening. A warm day. The temperature was temporarily stable in the evening and also a small rise in the temperature in the late evening. Near average dew point and stable from early in the day before rising from the late morning becoming moderately high in the early afternoon before briefly rising sharply in the late afternoon. The dew point then became stable, during the second half of the afternoon the dew point slowly fell and became stable in the evening. Near average relative humidity. Calm winds early in the day, light NE to NW winds in the early morning becoming E to NE veering to S to SE later in the morning before backing to E to NE in the late morning. In the late afternoon winds were ENE to NE, NE in the evening and N to NE later in the evening.
• 23/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds with increased clouds in the middle of the day with ci and cb clouds. A brief late morning mild thunderstorm with a brief period of heavy rain, followed by some light showers in the middle of the day. A very warm morning with the temperature stable in the early hours of the day. The temperature fell 7 C before and with the storm, became stable for 1 hour during the rainfall before rising during the afternoon while remaining lower than the earlier maximum temperature. The dew point was stable and moderately high from early in the day before falling briefly to near average during the storm and then rose back to moderately high following the storm. The dew point continued to rise in the afternoon before slowly falling from the mid afternoon while remaining moderately high. Near average relative humidity and stable from early in the day, rising in the late morning with the rainfall and became high. The relative humidity fell in the afternoon while remaining high in the afternoon and returned to near average in the evening. Light N to NE winds early in the day with some calm winds and ENE to NE winds at times. During the morning winds became WNW to NE, moderate N to NE winds with the storm, N to ENE with the showers, E to SE in the afternoon, becoming E to NE from 1:30pm with some N to NE winds followed by ENE to NE winds in the evening.
• 24/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds and some ci/ cs clouds. A warm morning and a warm day. A brief rise in the temperature at 2pm. The dew point fell slowly during the early hours of the day returning back to near average before rising from the morning moderately high through to the mid afternoon. From the mid afternoon the dew point fell and became near average in the evening. Relative humidity was near average early in the day, moderately high during the morning, a little variable during the afternoon and returned to near average in the evening being stable for much of the evening. A warm morning. Variable temperature from the late morning to mid afternoon. The dew point rose from early in the day, became moderately high during the morning before falling back to near average at midday. The dew point stabilised in the afternoon before rising very slowly in the evening while remaining close to average. Near average relative humidity. Some light and variable winds early in the day before N to ENE winds in the early morning, NNE to ESE from the mid afternoon following N to NW winds, E to NE during the afternoon with E to SE in the mid afternoon. Light NNE to NE in the evening, N to NE from 8pm and N to NNW in the late evening.
• 29/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds easing in the afternoon with some ci clouds. A warm morning with the temperature stable during much of the early hours of the day. A very warm day with the temperature a little variable during the morning and early afternoon. Stable and near average dew point from early in the day before falling a little during the morning, rose during the morning and early afternoon and became moderately high in the early afternoon. Following this the dew point fell during the afternoon back to near average before falling slowly in the evening and then rose slowly later in the evening. Near average relative humidity. Light N to NNE winds became calm in the early hours, NNE to W in the morning, E to NE becoming N to NE in the late morning, N through to E winds in the early afternoon and then became E to NE. Later in the evening winds became N to NE.
• 30/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu and sc clouds easing in the afternoon. A warm morning. The temperature a little variable from the late morning to mid afternoon. The dew point was near average and mostly stable from early in the day before falling slowly during the morning and became stable in the afternoon close to average. From the mid afternoon the dew point fell while remaining close to average. Relative humidity was near average and slightly above average during the daytime. Mostly calm winds until 8am with some NNE to N winds in the first few hours of the day, followed by light SE to NE winds and ENE to SE with some ENE to NE winds from the mid morning. In the afternoon winds were light E to SE, ESE to ENE becoming E to NE from the late afternoon and calm in the late evening.
• 31/1/20: Partly cloudy with cu clouds and cloudy at times. Variable temperature from the mid morning to mid afternoon. The dew point was stable and near average from early before rising during the morning, fell during the afternoon and became stable in the evening while remaining near average. Near average relative humidity with slightly above average day-time relative humidity. Calm winds early in the day with S to SW winds during the morning, becoming ENE to SE with some S to SE winds, E to SE from the late morning, ENE to ESE from the afternoon becoming calm in the evening.
