At Ferny Grove overnight temperatures were above average and the mean minimum temperature was the highest in 9 years. Daytime temperatures were also above average. Official stations in the Brisbane area measured above average overnight temperatures at many sites, while daytime temperatures were above average at all sites. The inland sites recorded mean maximum temperatures of 2 to 3 C above average. Rainfall at Ferny Grove was well below average recording only 25% of the long term average. The official sites in the Brisbane area also measured below average rainfall totals and record low at some sites. During the month at Ferny Grove air pressure was below average, mean humidity, mean minimum humidity, mean maximum humidity, mean dew point, mean minimum dew point and mean maximum dew point was well below average, wind speed was above average, and there were zero thunderstorms.

 

Temperature – Overnight temperature highest in 9 years and above average daytime temperatures

Monthly Mean Minimum Temperature: 20.9 ºC, 0.7 C above average and 1.2 ºC higher than same month in 2018. This is the second highest on record for February and the highest since the record high of 21.4 ºC in 2010. All official sites in the Brisbane area measured above average mean minimum temperatures, but were within 0.5 C of the long term average at some sites. The highest anomaly from the long term average was 0.8 C above average at Archerfield (20.9 C), Cape Moreton Lighthouse (22.8 C) and Logan City Treatment Plant (21.3 C). The sites that measured close to average mean minimum temperatures ranged between 0.1 C above average at Beerburrum (20 C) and Gatton (19.1 C which was the lowest mean minimum temperature observed) and 0.5 C above average at Redcliffe (22.4 C). The highest mean minimum temperature was 22.8 C at Point Lookout (0.2 C above average). Brisbane observed a mean minimum temperature of 22 C (0.6 C above average).

 

Monthly Mean Maximum Temperature: 31.2 ºC, 1.1 ºC above average and 0.7 ºC higher than same month in 2018. This is third highest on record for February and the highest since 34 ºC in 2017. All of the official sites in the Brisbane area observed above average mean maximum temperatures of at least 1 C at all but one site and at 2 to 3 C above average at the inland sites. The highest above average was Gatton with a mean maximum temperature of 34.1 C which was 3.3 C above average. This was also the highest mean maximum temperature recorded. In addition sites measuring at least 2 C above average were Amberley (2.9 C above average, mean maximum of 33.3 C), Archerfield (2.4 C above average, mean maximum temperature of 32.2 C) and Beaudesert (2.4 C above average, mean maximum temperature of 33 C). The lowest mean maximum temperature was 28.5 C at Cape Moreton Lighthouse (1.6 C above average). Brisbane Aero observed the lowest mean maximum temperature anomaly of 0.7 C above average with a mean maximum temperature of 29.7 C. Brisbane observed a mean maximum temperature of 31.6 C which was 1.5 C above average.

 

Mean Monthly Temperature: 26.0 ºC, 0.9 ºC above average and 0.9 ºC higher than same month in 2018. This is the third highest on record for February and the highest since 27.3 ºC in 2017.

 

Lowest Temperature: 16.8 ºC at 1:58 AM on 27 February 2019. Same month in 2018 was 14.2 ºC. This is the fourth lowest monthly minimum temperature for February, the highest since 17.6 C in 2017 on the 17th at 5:50 AM, the equal fifth lowest daily February minimum temperature and the lowest since 16.4 C on 8 February 2018 at 6:19 AM. Official stations in the Brisbane area observed the lowest temperature of the month on the 27th at many sites and at some sites on the 17th, 19th, 24th and 28th. The lowest was 14.7 ºC at Gatton on the 17th and the highest was 20.6 ºC at Point Lookout on the 27th. The lowest temperature at Brisbane was 18.9 ºC on the 27th. There were some cool nights in the Brisbane area at the end of the month with above average temperatures otherwise during the month. Beerburrum observed a new record of the lowest temperature for February of 15.5 C on 27th exceeding the old record of 15.6 C on the 12th in 2014.

 

Highest Temperature: 36.7 ºC at 1:39 PM on 13 February 2019. Same month in 2018 was 37.4 ºC. This is the fourth highest monthly maximum temperature for February, the lowest since 35.2 ºC in 2015 on 1 February at 3:31 PM, the sixth highest daily maximum temperature for February, and the highest since 37.4 ºC on 15 February 2018 at 1:21 PM. The official sites measured the highest temperature for the month on the 12th and 13th at most sites and at some sites on the 1st, 9th and 10th. The lowest was 30.9 ºC at Cape Moreton on the 9th and 10th and the highest was 42.9 ºC at Gatton on the 13th. Brisbane observed its highest temperature of 34.8 ºC on the 12th. Above average daytime temperatures dominated most of the month in the Brisbane area during the month, peaking during the middle of the month. At the end of the month there were some cool days.

 

Lowest Maximum Temperature: 25.6 ºC at 1:29 PM on 28 February 2019. This is the fifth highest monthly February lowest maximum temperature, the highest since 29.4 ºC in 2017 on 14 February at 1:05 PM, equal fourteenth lowest daily maximum temperature for February and the lowest since 24.6 ºC on 23 February 2018 at 9:00 AM. This month in 2018 was 21.5 ºC. Official stations in the Brisbane area measured the coolest day at many sites on the 26th and 28th and at some sites on the 23rd, 24th and 27th. These ranged between 25.9 ºC at Cape Moreton on the 23rd and 24th and 28.1 ºC at Amberley on the 28th. The lowest maximum temperature at Brisbane was 26.8ºC on the 26th and 28th. In the Brisbane area official sites measured cool days at the end of the month and average to above average for the rest of the month.

 

Highest Minimum Temperature: 25 ºC on 14 February 2019 at 5:55 AM. This is the third highest monthly February highest minimum temperature, the lowest since 24.6 ºC in 2016 on 19 February at 6:04 AM, the equal third highest daily minimum temperature for February and the highest since 25.2 ºC on 13 February 2018 at 6:15 AM. This month in 2018 was 25.2 ºC. Official stations in the Brisbane area measured the warmest night at most sites on the 14th and at some sites on the 13th, 15th and 21st. These ranged between 24.8 ºC at Amberley and Beaudesert on the 14th and 26.2 ºC at Logan City Treatment Plant on the 15th and Redcliffe on the 14th. The lowest minimum temperature at Brisbane was 25.4 ºC on the 14th. Much of the overnight temperatures in the Brisbane area were above average and was less frequent in the second half of the month.

 

Monthly Mean Minimum Grass Temperature: 19.1 ºC (0.5 ºC higher than same month in 2018)

 

Lowest Minimum Grass Temperature: 14.8 ºC on 27 February 2019 (1.2 ºC higher than same month in 2018). This coincided with the lowest minimum temperature of 16.8 ºC for the month.

 

Highest Minimum Grass Temperature: 22.6 ºC on 14 February 2019 (1.4 ºC lower than same month in 2018). This coincided with the highest minimum air temperature of 25 ºC for the month.

 

Highest Minimum Grass Temperature Depression: 2.8 ºC on 17 February 2019 with a minimum grass temperature of 16.3 ºC and an air temperature of 19.1 ºC.

 

Lowest Minimum Grass Temperature Depression: 0.1 ºC on 6 February 2019 with a minimum grass temperature of 20.1 ºC and an air temperature of 21 ºC.

 

Minimum temperatures at Ferny Grove were mostly above average with some close to average nights. Cool nights were confined to some days over the second half of the month. The 1st was 1 C above average, the 2nd was 2 C above average while the 3rd and 4th was equal to the long term average. The 5th to 7th was 1 C above average, the 8th was 2 C above average and the 9th was 1 C above average. The 10th was 2 C above average, the 11th was 3 C above average and the 12th was 1 C above average. The 13th was 2 C above average, warming to the highest on the 14th of 5 C above average, while the 15th was 2 C below average. A short cool period followed with the 16th equal to the long term average, the 17th and 18th was 1 C below average and the 19th was 2 C below average. The 20th was 1 C above average, the 21st was 4 C above average while the 22nd was 3 C average with the 23rd 1 C above average. It cooled to equal to the long term average on the 24th, 1 C below average on the 25th and 26th, 3 C below average on the 27th (lowest for the month) and equal to the long term average.

 

Maximum temperatures at Ferny Grove were mostly above average with cool days mostly at the end of the month. The peak of the heat was during the middle of the month. The 1st was 3 C above average, while the 2nd was 1 C above average, the 3rd was 1 C below average and the 4th was equal to the long term average. The 5th was 1 C below average, the 6th and 7th was 1 C below average and the 8th was 1 C above average. A warm to hot period then followed and interspersed with a slightly warm period. The 9th and 10th was 3 C above average, the 11th was 2 C above average warming to 6 C above average on the 12th and 7 C above average on the 13th which was the highest temperature for the month. The 14th to 17th was 1 C above average while the 18th was 2 C above average. The warmth returned with the 19th and 20th being 4 C above average, the 21st was 3 C above average and the 22nd was 2 C above average. The heat ceased with the 23rd being 1 C above average, the 24th was equal to the long term average before a cool period at the end of the month. The 25th was 2 C below average, the 26th was 4 C below average, the 27th was 1 C below average and the 28th was 4 C below average and the coolest for the month.

Lowest MSL Pressure: 1001.3 hPa on 9 February 2019 at 4:22 PM. The same month in 2018 saw 1003.4 hPa. This is the fourth highest monthly minimum air pressure for February, the lowest since 1000 hPa in 2017 on the 14 February at 12:20 AM, the seventh lowest daily air pressure for February and the lowest since 1000 hPa on the 14 February 2017 at 12:20 AM.

 

Highest MSL Pressure: 1023.5 hPa on 25 February 2019 at 9:08 AM. The same month in 2018 saw 1019.7 hPa. This is the second highest February monthly and daily maximum air pressure and the highest since the record high of 1023.6 hPa in 2015 on 7 February at 9:16 AM.

Maximum Wind Gust: 44 km/hr on 22 February 2019 at 12:43 PM. This is the third lowest February maximum wind gust and the lowest since 32.9 km/hr in 2012 on the 2 February at 7:47 AM. The maximum wind gust this month last year was 99.8 km/hr. This is the twenty-seventh highest daily wind gust on record for February and the highest since 44.1 km/hr on 21 February 2018 at 8:18 AM.

 

Maximum Wind Speed: 22 km/hr on 22 February 2019 at 12:40 PM (Moderate Force Wind). This is the second lowest monthly maximum wind speed for February and the lowest since the current record low of 18.1 km/hr in 2012 on 20 February at 5:35 PM.

Rainfall – record low rainfall

Monthly Rainfall Total: 39.5 mm (122.3 mm below average) and 24.4 % of the long term average. This total is in decile 2/ 16th percentile which ranks as very low and 96.5 mm below the long term median (27.3 % of long term median). This is lower than this month last year which was 305.3 mm, the fifth lowest on record and the lowest since 32.5 mm in 2017. The record low is 0 mm in 1997.

 

All of the main official sites in the Brisbane area measured below average rainfall totals for February and well below average at many sites. These ranged between 10 and 71 % of the long term average. Most sites ranked as low or very low historically with three sites ranking as average. These three sites were Brisbane Aero (62.8 mm and 52 % of the long term average), Point Lookout (103.3 mm, 71% of the long term average and the highest rainfall total in the Brisbane area of the main sites) and Redcliffe (63.8 mm, 53 % of the long term average). The sites ranking as low measured totals of between 17.6 mm at Beaudesert (16% of the long term average) and 50.6 mm at Logan City Treatment Plant (33% of the long term average). The remaining sites that ranked as very low measured totals of between 10 mm at Gatton (10% of the long term average) and 34.4 mm at Archerfield (23% of the long term average). Brisbane observed a rainfall total of 38 mm (27 % of the long term average) and ranked as low. The lowest rainfall total of the official sites in the Brisbane area was 1 mm at Sim Jue Creek which was a new record low for this site (old record of 10.2 mm in 2014 of 80 years of record). Carneys Creek The Ranch and Mt Tarampa also saw record low February rainfall totals while Harrisville Mary Street recorded a total of 8.8 mm which is the lowest rainfall total exceeding the old record of 7.2 mm in 1936.

 

In the Brisbane area most rainfall occurred in the first half of the month from showers as a result of onshore wind flow.

 

Number of Rain Days: 13 days, 4 less than this month last year and 1.5 days above average. This is the equal eighth highest on record and lowest since 5 days in 2017.

 

Highest Daily Total: 20.2 mm on 6 February 2019. This is the fifth lowest February highest daily rainfall on record and the lowest since 16.5 mm in 2017 which occurred on the 20 February. The highest daily total in the Brisbane area of all official sites was 66 mm at Clontarf on the 6th February 2019.

Showers in the early hours and early morning on the 2nd brought 1.7 mm. A light evening shower was followed by showers in the early hours and early morning of the 3rd, briefly heavy after midnight with 3.3 mm measured. Showers again from mid to late morning with light falls, light few drops in the afternoon followed by some showers in the evening. On the 4th there were light showers in the early hours and early morning with 4 mm measured on the 4th. In the mid to late morning there were light to moderate showers with 1.8 mm measured on the 5th. In the afternoon there were light few drops, light showers later in the evening followed by light to moderate frequent showers in the early hours and during the morning of the 6th with 20.2 mm measured on the 6th. Showers continued during the morning, becoming less frequent during the late morning and clearing in the early afternoon, with light showers in the early hours of the 7th brought 5.6 mm on the 7th. On the 8th there were light showers before dawn and clearing at sunrise with 1 mm. A late morning shower occurred on the 8th with 0.3 mm on the 9th. Light showers in the early hours on the 22nd with 0.4 mm measured. Light few drops during the middle of the day on the 24th and light showers in the early hours of the 25th brought 0.5 mm on the 25th. In the late morning there were light few drops in the late morning, light showers in the late evening and 2 brief light showers in the early hours on the 26th which brought 0.2mm. In the mid to late morning there were light few drops along with an afternoon light shower which brought 0.5 mm on the 27th. In the mid afternoon of the 27th there was a light shower, followed by light showers in the early hours of the 28th with 0.3 mm measured. Light showers continued until the late morning.

Weather influences

• A ridge of high pressure extended along the east Queensland coast with onshore winds as a high pressure system moved eastwards into the Tasman Sea
• The high pressure system became slow moving in the Tasman Sea from the 2nd maintaining the ridge of high pressure and onshore winds resulting in onshore flow
• A new high pressure system shifted east into the Tasman Sea on the 6th and further east on the 7th maintaining the onshore flow
• The high shifted slowly eastwards over the Tasman Sea maintaining the moist onshore flow on the 8th before the ridge decayed on the 9th and 10th as the high pressure system shifted further eastwards
• After warm air moved in, a south-easterly wind change shifted northwards mostly by the coast as a coastal trough shifted eastwards while a cold front moved over the Tasman Sea
• On the 11th a weak high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extended a weak ridge with light wind flow. The coastal trough stalled over Fraser Island while an inland surface trough shifted eastwards
• On the 12th the ridge decayed as the high pressure system shifted further east over the Tasman Sea. An amplifying upper trough combined with an inland surface trough brought an unstable air mass
• On the 13th the surface trough shifted east towards southeast Queensland drawing warm air into the region
• The surface trough cleared off the coast early in the day on the 14th extending a south easterly wind change northwards before decaying off the coast. Cooler air extended with the wind change as a new high pressure system moved east into the Tasman Sea and extended a ridge of high pressure
• From the 15th the ridge and moist onshore winds with some showers on the exposed coast was maintained as the high pressure system became slow moving in the Tasman Sea
• On the 16th Tropical Cyclone Oma well offshore in the Coral Sea extended easterly swells over southern coastal waters
• On the 17th the high pressure system shifted further east over the Tasman Sea and maintained the ridge.
• Swells along the coast south of Town of 1770 increased on the 17th and 18th as Tropical Cyclone Oma slowly moved south-westwards
• On the 18th the ridge started to decay as the high pressure system shifted eastwards
• The high pressure system shifted further eastwards on the 19th with the ridge of high pressure decaying. Tropical Cyclone Oma continued to move southwestwards well offshore with hazardous swells and seas from late in the day by the coast
• The 20th saw a weak high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extend a ridge of high pressure. Tropical Cyclone Oma shifted further southwards near New Caledonia while slowly weakening. This continued to produce hazardous coastal conditions with increasing seas and swell with dangerous surf, beach erosion and abnormally high tides
• On the 21st a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea maintained a weak ridge over the region. Coastal impacts continued as the Tropical Cyclone gradually moves to the southwest and well offshore and increasing fresh winds along the coast
• On the 22nd to the south of Sandy Cape the continued S to SW movement of the Tropical Cyclone that remained well offshore while weakening brought damaging winds along the exposed coast and islands while the existing hazards continued. A developing high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge of high pressure along the coast. This combination by way of synoptic forcing brought the increased coastal wind
• On the 23rd a strong high pressure system over south eastern Australia extended an increasing ridge northwards along the east coast of Australia combining with the Tropical Cyclone to maintain the damaging wind gusts and coastal impacts with the winds starting to ease during the day. The system weakening into a sub tropical low pressure system and became slow moving about 800km offshore of Brisbane
• On the 24th the Ex Tropical Cyclone Oma remained well offshore off the south Queensland coast and continued to produce large and powerful seas and swell and dangerous surf conditions. • On the 25th the high pressure system shifted eastwards into the Tasman Sea and extended a cool and moist air mass. The Ex Tropical Cyclone started to north northwards well offshore in response to the ridge of high pressure. Hazardous sea and swell remained along the coast while easing
• On the 26th the high pressure system maintained the ridge of high pressure along the coast and moist onshore winds
• A new high pressure system shifted eastwards into the Tasman Sea on the 27th maintaining the ridge, moist onshore winds and showers especially on the exposed coast. The high pressure system became slow moving on the 28th

• 1/2/19: Fine and partly cloudy with cu and ac clouds in the morning and cloudy with as, sc and cu in the afternoon. Moderately low dew point in the late morning and early afternoon. Light S to SW winds in the early morning then S to SSE becoming SE to ENE from mid morning. Winds were E to SE from the late morning.
• 2/2/19: Showers in the early hours and early morning clearing to a fine and partly cloudy day with cu clouds. Cloudy at times during the morning and cu clouds with ci, cs and cc clouds in the afternoon. Light evening shower. Moderately low dew point during the afternoon. Light and variable winds early, S to SW from early morning and SSE to ESE from mid morning. In the evening winds were E to SE and S to SW in late evening.
• 3/2/19: Light to moderate showers in the early hours, briefly heavy after midnight. Showers again from mid to late morning with light falls, light few drops in the afternoon followed by some showers in the evening. Cloudy at times and partly cloudy otherwise with cu clouds. Variable temperature during the morning and fell from mid to late morning. Moderately low dew point in the early evening. High relative humidity in late morning. Light and variable winds becoming SSW to ESE from early morning with some ESE to ENE winds. In the afternoon winds were ENE to SE, easing during the evening with some light and variable winds in the late evening.
• 4/2/19: Light showers in early hours and early morning, followed by light to moderate showers in the mid to late morning. Cloudy periods with cu clouds during the morning and partly cloudy from the middle of the day. Light and variable winds early, shifting S to SW in the morning, S to SE in mid morning and E to SE later in the morning. SE to NE winds from middle of the day and SSE to E in early evening and S to SE later in the evening. Increasing and high relative humidity in late morning before falling as usual in the late morning. Temperature fell in the mid to late morning before resuming rising and was variable in the afternoon.
• 5/2/19: Light few drops in the afternoon with light showers later in the evening. Cloudy at times with cu and sc clouds. Light W to SSW winds in the early morning, shifting S to ENE from early morning, SSE to ENE from late morning and in the evening winds were SSE to SE becoming SSW to SE. Near average but variable dew point. Variable while rising relative humidity during the afternoon and becoming high during the evening.
• 6/2/19: Light to moderate frequent showers in the early hours and during the morning, becoming less frequent during the late morning and clearing in the early afternoon. Light to moderate shower with heavy falls in the late evening. Cloudy during the morning and clearing to partly cloudy in the afternoon with cu clouds. Variable temperature from early morning to late afternoon. High relative humidity early and moderately high during the afternoon. Light SW to SE winds.
• 7/2/19: Light showers in the early hours before clearing. A cloudy day with cu clouds. Light winds mostly SSE to WSW early, S to SE in the mid morning and SE to ESE from later in the morning. Winds shifted SSW to SE later in the evening.
• 8/2/19: Light showers before dawn, clearing at sunrise. A late morning light shower. Cloudy during the morning and partly cloudy from early afternoon with cu clouds. Light S to WSW winds early becoming S to ESE from mid morning and SSE to NE from late morning. In the evening winds were NE to NNW.
• 9/2/19: A warm day. Partly cloudy with cu clouds. Light few drops of rain in mid evening. Light and variable winds in the early morning becoming SE to NNE during the morning, E to NE from late morning and some NNW and W to WSW winds in the evening.
• 10/2/19: Fine and a warm day. Partly cloudy with cu clouds clearing and persisting during the day and became mostly sunny from the late morning. Light and variable winds early, becoming SSE to SW from the mid morning, an E to SE wind change from late morning, ESE to SE in the mid afternoon, E to SE later in the afternoon and SSE to SE in the evening.
• 11/2/19: A warm morning. Partly cloudy with cu becoming sunny in the afternoon. Light S to SE winds becoming S to WSW in the early hours, then SSE to SE in the early morning and SSE to NE from the mid morning, E to NE winds from early afternoon and NNE to NNW winds in the late evening.
• 12/2/18: Fine and a hot day. Mostly sunny with some cu clouds during the morning becoming partly cloudy from the middle of the day, easing later in the afternoon. Cb clouds in the mid afternoon. A nearby thunderstorm to the south in the mid afternoon with thunder heard without rainfall. Increasing dew point during the early afternoon (moderately high) and easing in evening. Light and variable winds, SE to NE from early afternoon, ENE to NNE from mid afternoon and SSW to N in late evening.
• 13/2/18: Sunny and a hot day. Some cu clouds developing during the day. Increasing dew point during the morning, becoming moderately high in the afternoon and remaining for the rest of the day. Light and variable winds early, becoming N to ENE with some E to SE winds during the morning before ESE to NE winds (sea breeze) from the afternoon. In the evening winds were variable with light S to SW winds in the late evening.
• 14/2/18: Partly cloudy becoming cloudy at times easing later in the afternoon with cu clouds. A fine day. Moderately high dew point early in the day returning to near average in the early hours and became moderately low in the evening. Light S to SE winds shifting S to SW winds in the early hours before a S to SE wind change in the mid morning with near moderate winds at times through the rest of the day.
• 15/2/19: Fine and partly cloudy. Moderately low dew point, becoming low in the evening. Low relative humidity early and late in the day. Light S to SE winds becoming S to SW, SSW to SE from mid morning, SE from late morning, and in the evening winds were SSE to SW becoming S to WSW.
